Cara Brown Workshop

Watercolor Basics and Beyond

About Cara Brown:
Cara Brown has been showing and selling her watercolor paintings since her first Marin Open Studios in 2007 – and teaching and leading watercolor groups since 2011. She was invited to show every year for over a decade at the Sausalito Art Festival until it closed in 2020. The festival awarded her two First Place, Watercolor Awards, until the category was eliminated. She has exhibited regularly at the Marin County Fair’s Fine Art Exhibits, and has won dozens of awards, including First Place, Watermedia several times, as well as Marin County Artist of the Year. Cara has exhibited at the California State Fair in Sacramento, winning several ribbons there too and she is a signature member of the California Watercolor Association where she has won two awards in their annual International Exhibition.

Artist Statement:
I am obsessed by color. I am a sucker for the drama of striking light. I keep being drawn to the lush fullness of fruit. I’m soothed by looking at flowers. I think food can be as beautiful as anything else. I want only the simplicity of watercolor – painting pure pigment on cotton paper. I love to make these paintings.

About the Workshop:
Cara has curated a special 2-day session based on her Watercolor Basics and Beyond workshop.  In this interactive studio workshop, Cara will share her techniques for creating soft edges, fuzzy backgrounds and luminous light.  Students will be working from their own photographs and there are no specific subject matter assignments.  Paint what you are inspired to paint!  It is recommended that the main subject in your source photo be illuminated brightly with some strong contrast between foreground and background. Be sure to bring all of your usual painting supplies but the most important one is good paper.  Cara’s methods are best on 300 lb. paper.
